Social Security's Double Benefit Payments December and January

Social Security is set to issue two payments in a rare occurrence of double benefits. This special dispensation is slated for recipients of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. This program assists various groups, including individuals with disabilities, those with complete or partial blindness, and senior citizens living on extremely limited incomes.

As we approach the end of 2023, a period marked by festive celebrations, family reunions, and moments of peace and joy, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is preparing to distribute its December payments. Among the beneficiaries, those enrolled in the SSI program are poised to receive a dual payment.

Social Security announces dual SSI payments with COLA increase for end of 2023 and early 2024

This isn’t the first instance of such an occurrence. The dual payment for SSI program participants has been a feature in previous years as well. The forthcoming double payment is unique because it combines the regular December payment and an additional payment, which is essentially an advance for January 2024. This subsequent payment is notable as it will be the first to reflect the newly approved Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) of 3.2% by the SSA.

The SSI program is comprehensive, extending its benefits to children and adults alike. It provides support to children suffering from disabilities, blindness, or those who fall under certain financial thresholds. For elderly individuals to be eligible for these benefits, they must be at least 65 years of age and meet the program’s income requirements.

As per the SSA’s established schedule, the beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income program will receive their two payments as per the calendar set for all payments in 2023.

The first of these payments is scheduled to be disbursed on December 1, 2023. The second payment will follow later in the month, on Friday, December 29. This payment for January is sent out earlier than usual because January 1st, the standard date for monthly payments, is a federal holiday. On this day, most government institutions, including banks, remain closed. Therefore, the SSA has made provisions to ensure beneficiaries receive their January payment in advance.
