CalFresh is the name of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the state of California. This program is designed to help low-income individuals and families access nutritious food by providing them with monthly benefits that can be used to purchase eligible food items. CalFresh is administered by the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The dates for CalFresh benefit payments, or issuance dates, are determined based on the last digit of the recipient’s case number and are typically spread out throughout the month. Benefit issuance is spread across a 10-day period within the month. For example, if the last digit of your case number is “1,” your benefits might be issued on the 1st of the month.

The allocation of CalFresh benefits to eligible households is contingent upon several key factors, which encompass the household’s size, income thresholds, and additional assets. In California, the average monthly payment per eligible individual stands at $196. For a single-person household, the maximum monthly SNAP payment amounts to $281. Meanwhile, a four-member household can receive a maximum of $939, and an eight-member household is eligible for up to $1,691. Beyond eight members, an incremental addition of $211 is made for each additional household member.
The eligibility criteria in California primarily hinge on the monthly gross income, set at or below 130% of the federal poverty level. For instance, a one-person family must not exceed a monthly income of $1,473 to qualify. Similarly, a three-person household should not surpass a limit of $2,495, and a six-member household’s income limit is $4,029.
